Default burn fuel and suck *** cuz my intake?

K, heres my situation. I just installed a cold air intake kit on my 1999 Dodge stratus es2.5L v6. It sounds sick as hell but theres a few issues. My gas milleage is horrible and my exauhst turned a dark gray and sometimes even black color. I took this kit back off and returned it to stock to save me from my huge bills at the gas pump. Why did it do this and how can I make this kit work?

Did you plug your Mass Air Flow sensor back in? Did you have to mess with the Oxygen sensor at all?

I removed it before i installed the kit and then re-attatched it afterwards. I never touched any oxygen sensors. i checked my ecu and no codes came up so i figured all my oxygen sensors were ok and my mass air flow sensor wasnt messed up.

what type of filter on it? was it a well known brand or brandless? If it was a brandless that could cause the bad gas mileage or you will never kno if the filter like a k and n it needed oil to sucessfully filter out particles because the cotton could have been very thin.
