96 Stratus Stalling Problem
I just bought a 96 Dodge Stratus and it is a great car. The original owner put in a new alternator and brakes ,andI got a new battery because ofproblemsI had with it starting. The battery seemed to help but now it just randomly stalls. I could be moving or waiting at a trafic light. Most of the timeI am going under 30mph. I dont know if the cold has anything to do with it butI guess it could. BTWInoticed that after it stalls it is hard to get it going before it stallsagain and when I do get it started without it stallingmy engine seems to bereving. The tacometer shows the rpms jumping between 750 and 1000 idle. Let me know if you have any ideas of what my problem could be.
maybe its some sort of idle chip... that happened to my explorer once...... the rev's would jump around when stopped then moving if i took my foot off the gas and let the rev's drop down it would stall no mater how fast i was going.. scared the crap out of me and i took it in right away
A friend of mine had that problem with a cirrus, it turned out that somehow the timing belt had skipped a tooth. It still ran but thecam position sensor was sending the wrong signal to the PCM due to the cams new poaition, causing it to stall ocasionally and idle eratically.
i had the same problem with my 95. i would be driving, and it seemed to happen most when i would hit the brakes. the car would just stall out, have no trouble starting again, and be fine unless i was slowing down. it took a few trips to my mechanic before it was fixed, or as fixed as he could get it. he never found out exactly what it was, and it has not run the same since.
