Default Newbie needs help

Hey guys,

I'm new to this so please go easy on me.

I have an 02 Stratus with a 2.7 V6. We need a tune-up, but haven't dealt with this type of engine before. Went to the parts store and the guys was really confused. What in the heck do we need for a tune-up? This guys was talking about Ignition Wires and Control Modules. Also, he is saying no spark plug wires. I'm concerned because the guy couldn't figure out if there was a distributor or not. I didn't think there was, but I am mechanically challenged. That is why I don't actually work on my vehicles, my fiancee does.

Could someone please just tell me what parts need replacing when doing a tune-up. I know it seems like a pretty dumb question, but by the time I left the store, I was more confused than when I walked in.

Thanks guys!!!!

A general tune up consists of new spark plugs, new plug wires, new distributor cap and rotor. Thats the general electrical part. Of course you want to check all the fluids too.

You should order a Haynes repair manual to help instruct you on doing things like this. Especially on an engine you have never worked on.

That's my problem, the guy at the store is telling me there is no distributor and no wires. He even called the manager over to double check. Let's keep in mind they pulled four different books out because the computer wasn't listing what was needed. I'm going to go ahead and get the book, but was extemely confused when I left the store and wanted a quick answer.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

with the 2.7 liter motor there is no plug wires or distributer it is a direct ignition which means the coils are on top of the spark plugs (less spark loss that way) if you look in the center of the cam covers or valve covers you will see 3 coils on the front and three on the back with two screws holding each in place. each one is computer controled as to when it fires. so basicly the only thing you need to really worry about is plugs. when you find the coils unplug the wires fron the coil turn out the two screws holding it in and gently pull up and look in the hole and you will see the plugs. the back ones are a pita to get at so if your not totally cofortable you may want to have someone help. on the back ones you have to put the socket and extensions in in pieces in order to get it in.
