Champion 3570 platinum plugs
I recently purchased a 2003 Stratus SE 4 door with the 2.4 engine and 98000 miles. It ran fine but in the course of going through it I changed the plugs to (4) new Champion platinum 3570s. The gap according to the underhood decal was .050 so this is what I set them at. After I changed the plugs I noticed the car was misfiring when stopped when the transmission was in drive. It would hesitate for just a second and then go back to idling OK. Sometimes it would do this several times in a row. Since it wasn’t doing this before I changed the plugs I naturally assumed they were the cause.
I read the forums here and saw that arcing was a problem so I bought some new spark plug wires and plenty of grease. I checked the plugs for carbon tracking and reinstalled everything. I’ve only driven the car a few miles but it seems to be OK now. My question is I was looking at the specs for my car on one of the sparkplug sites and it says the gap on the 3570 plugs should be .040. I’m guessing the bigger the gap the better the chance of misfiring so would it help to pull the plugs and regap them to .040? And is there a better plug to use then these? I went to three stores and these were all I was able to get.
