Default '96 Stratus 2.4 Tranny in limp mode

ok , this is what happened - I was driving my '96 Stratus around a corner , hit the brakes, and all of a sudden my car goes out of gear (neutral). I noticed that the gear indicator was lit up across the board when this happened. I pulled over, threw it park, put it back in drive, and now I believe it's in limp mode, since it will not go above second gear. I know this can happen when certain sensors go bad, but does anyone have any idea which one in particular? To narrow it down- my speedometer IS working. I'm bringing it to my mechanic Thursday, but he sounded as confused as me when I called him about it. I'm hoping to get around a tranny rebuild (Please ,Lord) I would be very grateful for any help.

I don't know for sure if this applies but there were some Recalls on these cars.
I would call a Dealership give them your Vin and ask if there are any recalls or TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) that apply to your vehicle for the Transmission.

Just a thought,
Good Luck,
Dutch
