Default 05 Stratus Gas Gauge Problem

I have a 2005 Stratus with around 70,000 miles, 4 cylinder, fule injected...
Anyway, about a month ago I ran out of gas with 1/4 of a tank showing on the gas gauge. It seems to be getting worse as last week I ran out showing a half a tank. I had been keeping track of my milage and thought I was getting close to a fill-up but with a half a tank showing I thought I was okay. Lesson learned.
Up to now the car has been great. Any suggestions as to what to do? Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Steve.

Just a thought... My '00 had me out of gas at 1/4 tank. I re-filled it, and figured it was a good time to use fuel injector cleaner too. Kept a gas can in the trunk to see what It would do. It hasn't given me any issues since. Sometimes the gunk just keeps the float from sliding all the way down, and the cleaner seemed to have helped the float too.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. When I fill the tank, sometimes it takes several minutes to register "full" on the gauge. It does sound like a sticky float. I'd think that if it was the sending unit the reading would always be wrong or inconsistant.
