Default Won't shift, no speedometer, messed up fuel gauge 01 Stratus

Okay, this is a 2.4 L DOHC 01 Stratus SE. The battery went dead. Replaced battery because it wouldn't hold a charge. My BF put in a battery with too many amps. So then replaced it with the right one. From the time that the battery died, my car won't shift. It's stuck in either 1st or 2nd (limp mode), The speedometer is compeltely dead, the fuel gauge bounces all over depending on starting and stopping. After reading threads on here We've changed the output and input speed sensors. The wiring connecting those look okay. We are still stuck. I have no idea what else it could be. I live in a rural town with no dealership to have the computer codes ran. I tried the Trip odometer and put it in the on postition. It did run through a lot of codes and such, but none of them started with P. From what I understand they should start with a P.
I'm basically trying to figure this out on my own since my BF doesn't seem to know anything about new cars. If this was an old ford or Chevy, he might be able to figure this out, but not on a newer car. I've been searching online in forums ( this one is great! ) and other websites. Everyone else seems to have had their problem fixed by the Speed sensors. Any help or ideas appreciated. The cheaper the better... money is super tight right now. Thanks in advance!

UPDATE** We have changed the input and output speed sensors and had the codes checked and cleared. I'm still getting codes P1698 - No Bus message from TCM and P0500 - No Vehicle Speed Signal Circuit. STUMPED! Any ideas??

have you tried to disconnect the negative on the battery, say overnight, and see if things work in the morning when it's re-connected. Putting a battery with a higher amperage should not have made a difference unless something got shorted out during install. If leaving it overnight dosen't help, please post back with all the codes (p or not), so we can see if they mean anything.

I know it has been disconnected for an hour or so, but not all night. I'll go ahead and try that tonight and check back in. I'll also come back equiped with the codes. THANKS!

Default Won't shift, no speedometer

I had a similar problem. It started out that my speedometer would bounce around and my transmission wouldn't shift correctly. Eventually, the speedometer wouldn't move at all and the transmission wouldn't shift at all (stuck in limp mode). Error codes p0700, p0729, p0501. I replaced the input and output speed sensors, shift solonoid and changed transmission fluid and filter. I checked the continuity on the wires coming from the plug that connected to the output speed sensor with an ohm meter and found an open circuit on one of the wires. The wire was broken inside the connector. The connector is only available from dealer or scrap yard. The dealer was able to order the connector for about thirty dollars. To temporarily fix the connector, I found an old hat pin, that was about 2 inches long and pushed it into the connector until it made contact with the pin that was in the connector. I cut the broken wire and stripped the insulation from the wire and wrapped it around the exposed metal of the hat pin, then wrapped it with electrical tape. I plugged in the connector and test drove the car and everything worked normally.

Default Solution solution! Read read read!

SOLUTION SOLUTION! READ READ READ!

I had this problem with my 2001 Stratus 2.4 v4 SE 4dr TWICE. The second time I forgot how I fixed it the first time.
ITS THE 10A IGNITION FUSE UNDER THE HOOD IN THE FUSE BOX. Dont ask how or why but yes the fuse had blown and replacing it fixed ALL the problems with the gauges not working and not shifting out of first gear. PLEASE spread this around. It is NOT the trans input/output sensors NOT the TCM NOT any solenoids. You will waste money! Its a damn $2 fuse!

Default I was hoping and praying for the fuze to be the answer.

It's not the fuse in my case but thanks for the advice.

I am working with a 2000 Stratus SE.

I have never noticed any problems with any of this til today; it was an all-of-the sudden deal.

But pulling all of the fuses the "check engine" light went out though haha.
