Sludge begone!!!!!!!!!
2004 Stratus Es 2.7
well, i got the ugly lifter tick while pulling the wifes car into the driveway. Knowing what it indicated I turned it off and took it into the garage post haste.
85000 miles
lazy on oil changes ( i know i am the first on to admit personal guilt )
oil light never came on
keep the engine bay spotless
just changed the oil last month @ 1100 miles ago
I have known it was building sludge for quite a while. been treating with bg
flushes and atf flushes hoping to turn back the clock
I was hoping to find some light sludge build up in the pan and possibly a blocked pick up.
drained oil nasty brown and red
dropped the pan ( found oil seeping the entire circumference of the pan
plugged pcv definitely
pan was plastered with thick crystalized sludge.
upper crankcase above baffle looked ok, some build up on sides of mains but rods and cylinder bores looked great, dropped the rod caps , all bearings looked great. maybe I got it in time
Pulled the pcv , hoses and valve was open. UH oh
pulled front valve cover.........uhhghghghgh
packed and nasty.
spent the weekend tearing doen to the block, pulled both heads
taking to the head shop for hot tanking and valve seals.
will clean the rest of the parts and block as best as i can with good ol napa
carb cleaner ( the nasty stuff)
going to replace the oil and water pump chain guides all the gaskets, maybe do the complete timing set not sure yet,
oh and its my first real engine work beyond replacing the timing belt on a 98
stratus and an AC clutch on a 2000 dakota.
still have a little pucker on retiming the heads........ especially since the timing chain does not have the "plated" links like it is supposed to.
I do have the alldata subscription so I have that going for me!
The whole time I was tearing down ( not one broken or stripped bolt,
wire harness is well laid out ) I had the movie scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High about his dads set of TV repair tools
"you cant fix this car Spicolli, Hes gonna kill us!!"
Will try to post photos on Monday
Always welcome any pointers
