Default 2000 Stratus transmission leak not pan

Hi all,

I have relied on your expertise for a while now but this is my first post.

I have a 2000, 2.4 liter DOHC automatic Stratus with a terrible transmission leak. I thought it was the pan gasket so I dropped the pan, changed the filter and gasket and filled it up but when I started the car back up it was still leaking badly. I cleared the gunk away and found it is leaking along a seam in the transmission body about an inch above the pan gasket on the front of the transmission. There are several Torque Screws that appear to hold this seam together running vertically through it but tightening them did not stop the leak. Is there another gasket here that could have failed? If so, how hard is it to replace that gasket. The leak is probably a 1/4 quart every 30 minutes.

Thanks.
Ben

Hey, I just had the same leak, on a v6 2.7L stratus sedan. I think it's pretty much the same setup, if not exactly the same.
Just got it back from the tranny shop. They told me I needed a new seal at the solenoid block, which is on the front of the tranny, and a new seal and bushing where the tranny goes into the torque converter(inside the bell housing). To do this, the tranny must be removed.
Cost me $800. They charge $450 just to take the tranny out and put it back in. So the seals and bushing were $350.
Once they got the tranny out(and therefore thought they had me by the you-know-whats), they said the solenoid block was cracked and the bell housing was "wallowed-out", and some other stuff, and all together it wud be $2250!!!!
Don't let 'em fool you! What you do is make a surprise visit and demand to see evidence, or you can tell them you need to see proof(which might not work cuz they could just damage those parts while you're on your way there).
Another good tactic to use, if they try to screw you, is to say you just want your car back and you're gonna get a whole new tranny for less than $1000 and put it in yourself (they'll definitely start "working some magic" on that new estimate).
Anyway, after a week of arguing with them, they got my car running like new for $800.
They're all crooks, as far as I'm concerned. Don't trust them one bit, no matter what they tell you.
Hope this helps and good luck.
