I just bought a 99 Stratus from a friend , its got a newly rebuilt 3.0 motor, rebuilt front end , new tires , ; he just put 452 miles on the motor and the transmission went out , or quit working and , he,s tired of it , and I bought it ; its got the - AUTO\STICK -the transmission works in drive 2 , when its put in reverse and other gears it has a whine like things are moving but not engaging, someone said something bout a selenoid ???? Anyone have any ideas?? Could the ecm- or computer be causing this ?

You sure it's not a 2.5? I ask because the 2.5 (6g73) is TIGHT under the hood, I can't imagine there being enough room for the 3.0 (6g72) model fitting.

What you are saying is that the transmission is lockedin "limp home mode". IE: only 2 and r work. If you're not getting anything besides 2, than the solonoid could be bad (but it's an easy fix, and rather cheap considering). The other issue may be that the computer isn't reading correctly, if you really did squeeze the 6g72 in there, and causing the trans to freak out. Depending on how many miles are on the trans, and if the correct fluid (VERY IMPORTANT TO USE ATF+4 ONLY) wasn't used, there could be problems there too. The transmission freaks out if the wrong fluid wasn't used. It may also be that it's simply failed.

Its a 2.5 6 cly. in the Stratus ; I had a Ford Taurus with the 3.0; I got mixed up ; so wheres this transmission selinoid located? I want to try that first; I really dont know what fluids in there, he said it worked perfect and then just had no other gears when he stopped at a light; Thanks

Looking from the front of the car, the solonoid is attacked to the top of the transmission, and comes up on the right hand side of the engine. Pretty easy to remove and replace, 4 bolts if i'm not mistaken. You will just need socket extensions to get down to them. The trans fluid should be a light strawberry color. If it's dark it needs to drained and refilled, if it's any OTHER color, it's wrong, and should be drained and replaced with the proper fluid.

Thanks for the info, I believe if I end up doing a tranny job on it ,I may put a 5 speed in ; I already have a 99 Stratus with a 2.0 liter and 5 speed and love it , 34 mpg , and peppy too ; I,ll try to find a car blown up or rough to get all the parts ; Thanks alot !!

Yep good luck with that.
Keep in mind that the 2.0 is a dodge engine, the 2.5 is a Mitsubishi engine. The transmission may not fit right (or at all), and you may need to find someone to reprogram the computer to accommodate the fact that the 41te isn't there anymore...

Please post pics, and detailed list of what you have to do to get it working properly, as a lot of us 1g strat owners would LOVE to do the same!
We lose sooo much horsepower through the A/T of these things.
