Default Help with A 99 v6 Stratus

My mom Called me this morning because her car was smoking, Checked the coolant and oil, All were okay.

I had her start the car and it was making a squeaking/grinding noise coming from the belt area on the front of the engine.

THe car struggled for a few seconds then died. The noise sounded like it was coming from one of the pullies or alternator or something of that nature.

I know that it would be hard to give me a straight shot answer for this but im just wondering if any one has ever Had to go through this same problem and could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advanced.

I've gone through this problem too. I can point you to the right direction, you need to check the drive belts and any pulleys that the belt rides on. probably one of the pulleys or alternator or something of that nature causing the squeaking noise.

I figured it out, I opened the timing cover and one of the pulleys is broken in there, causing the belt to rub on the cover. Sucks because I don't have the tools to fix it here.

Thanks for your reply though.

Here's to hoping that the timing didn't get messed up with a broken pulley. The 6g73 is an interference engine, and if that pulley put the timing out by more than a couple notches, there is a good possibility of upper end damage (piston hitting valve). It is something to look out for.

If it hasn't been done recently, this might not be a bad time to change the timing belt and water pump (as it's driven by the timing belt).
