Default 2000 Resonator assembly

Can anyone tell me something about the purpose of this tube like creature. It looks more like bling bling than anything automotive.

I have a pesky oil leak and I am thinking that the crankcase may be pressurized. I have changed PCV valve and flushed the engine. I have looked for kinks in lines but have found none.

I read that the resonator goes to the crankcase. I had the thing off and it just looks like a hollow tube. I did notice that there was nothing but friction holding it in place. Should it be clamped.

Any ideas what might be the culprit on the leak on my 2.5?

Default not valve cover gaskets

Sorry. I knew I should have mentioned that I replaced both gaskets and cleaned out the sludge while they were off about a year ago.
