I just purchased a 96 stratus with 140,000 miles on it. It runs good. I just had to replace the battery a few days ago. Today the check engine light came on while driving on freeway.
I used the method of turning key on off 3 times and got the following codes...

12 - 42 - 31 - 55

Ive found out from searching web that the 12 code meant battery was disconnected recently (understandable as I just had battery replaced) And I know that the 55 code is end of codes.

What are the meanings of the 31 and 42 code?

Any help would be appreciated.... Thanks

 

Take it down to your local parts dealer and see if he'll read your codes for free. Lets us know...

 

A more in depth scan may be necessary, as the keydance is rather limited in what it finds (2 digit codes). A trip to autozone or a garage with a proper scanner is a good idea. This should give you something to start off with though.

31 Bad evaporator purge solenoid circuit or driver

42 Automatic shutdown relay circuit open or shorted
OR
42 Fuel pump relay control circuit
OR
42 Fuel level unit - no change over miles
OR
42 Z1 voltage missing when auto shutdown circuit energized
