So my girlfriend bought an 04 Stratus SE. Here recently we've noticed a knocking noise. It comes under acceleration/load mainly, but intermittently while idling also. However, if you rev it, it makes the noise until you let off the gas, and doesn't start again until it gets to about 1500 rpm or so. Does it sound like spark knock, valve rattle, a rod, bearing, or what? I've taken it to 3 different mechanics and they all have different opinions. I don't think it's a rod, because if it was I figured it would be making the noise all the time, and wouldn't quit while motor was revving down. It seems to me to have classic spark knock symptoms, but I'm not a licensed mechanic, just a hobbyist, and thus have no experience. Any comments are welcome. Thanks!!

 

Or what? It would be nice to know what engine. But I can tell you, hearing a knocking noise via the internet is pretty darn difficult.

 

Lol, sorry. It's got the 2.4 DOHC I4. I can try to record the sound and upload it if that helps.

 

I can't help without me physically seeing/feeling/hearing in person. I've head water pumps can cause noise too.
