Default Shopping for a mechanic vs. getting teeth drilled...

I'll take the teeth drilling. I relocated from OH to FL and don't know many people here. Recently had repairs on my 2002 Dodge Stratus ES 2.7 L: AC/ALT belt & fuel injector #5 replaced. The mechanic did not communicate well and had me confused. Dropped my car off to me and said "now all you need is an EGR valve." Asked him what it is and what it does. Then he said "I wouldn't bother with it if I were you." I'm wondering why he didn't include it in the repairs when he had the car. I researched EGR valve on web but no really clear answer.

So my question: Is the EGR valve necessary? Will it affect fuel mileage, how the car runs, etc? Or is it just a device for emission control? I did read where they become clogged with carbon, but can be cleaned.

Also, he said he disconnected my CEL, but it is on. Does that make sense? I would think if it was disconnected it would be off. I don't like that he did this without asking first.

If you take the time to read this and reply, I truly appreciate your time!
Thank you!

yes egr valve is necessary,it mainly is an emission device to lower nitrous oxide emission ,it helps lower combustion temperature and reduce spark knock(so you don't have to use higher octane gas),yes the ports can clog you can remove valve and clean them out. have you tried taking car to autozone or advance to see why CEL is on that might tell you what's wrong
