Gas Guzzler?
96 Strat 2.5 L V-6
Got the car this week, runs great for the most part, but it seems to be sucking down gas like an SUV. Did a fuel system cleaning today, no real difference as far as I can tell. Anybody got the MPG rating on this car? I still have got to get an owner's manual.

thanks. I guess I should be getting at least 22 in mostly highway. I have yet to take it on the highway due to the ABS system and brakes being completely shot. Just got new tires, balanced and aligned. No more steering wheel vibration, which is good, but the car still feels like the drivers front tire is deflated. Maybe its the shocks...
Unfortunately you have a car that is A. slow, B. Gets OK MPG, and C. Has a older designed V-6. Considering your car's a 96 it isn't suprising you get crappy gas mileage. Newer V6's are alot more efficient. This is part of the reason I'm not a huge fan of V6. They aren't fast, and dont get amazing gas mileage. They are just in the middle. Fortunately though my 1995 Z28 gets 27 MPG on the highway, even after I dynoed 330 HP/ 380 ft/lbs to the wheels. I'd check all your maintenance to see if there's something that needs to be done to bring it back up to stock MPG.
Well, for my purposes, the car is actually pretty fast. All ive driven up till now are big cars, so the acceleration is great as far as I can tell. Speed? The car hits ninety and feels like it has plenty more. I dont drive that fast normally, but I wanted to see what the car could do. Its not even a loud engine like I hear most people say. I like my car, gas mileage is average but I can deal with that. I dont know how the design of the V-6 has changed that much, every car ive driven is either a V-6 or V-8. Whats new about the newer V-6s?
Well first of all, newer cars have stricter emissions which require a cleaner, more efficient motor. Obviously you're car is computer controlled and has a lot of sensors. But certain things wrong may not make your CEL go on. Newer cars have even more sensors, and CEL codes. There may be something wrong with your car and you dont know it. I understand your car is fast enough for your purposes. So is my Stratus. My wife drives it and she doesn't need a really fast car. Just out of curiousity, what kinda V8's were you driving that were slower than your stratus? I've had several V8's, the slowest being an 89 Crown Victoria (Police package). And this car is still a little faster than a V6 Stratus. Have you taken it up to the track yet?As for your car hitting 90 mph, that's obvious. The computer most likely stops you about 110-120 mph, I'm not sure. Somebody else might know where the limiters at. I'm not dissing your car man, I like Stratus'. I'm just trying to explain why you can't expect four cylinder gas mileage in a 10 year old V6 motor. You definitely should get 26 on the highway or something's wrong.
