Default 00 Stratus Immobilizer?

I've got a 2000 Stratus 2.4L V6 around 160,000 miles.

I replaced a bad ignition switch this weekend, but I now can't turn the key.

I don't think its as simple as the tumblers sticking (I gave it some grease and rapped the key a few times already). It seems like a security lock out feature. Did I active an immobilizer some how by changing the ignition switch?

If I did, what's the next step?

There is nothing that would keep you from turning the key. The immobilizer will actually let the car start/run for 3 seconds. No less, no more.
Where did you get the ignition switch from? Do you have the correct key for it (if it came from a junkyard car, you need the key to the car it CAME FROM).

One thing to try, is to pull on the steering wheel while you try to turn the key, the wheel lock (that keeps the wheel from turning when the key is in the "lock" position may be misaligned and jamming everything up. You may need to take it apart and re-install it again if that doesn't help, or if it works but you always have to jam on the wheel.

ok, thank you for that response. i didn't 'think' it was a security thing but it was all i could think of at the time. the steering wheel is actually in the lock position as well (turned it to the right to get at the battery wheel well). could that be the issue?

its a new ignition switch from an autozone. its the original key (grey).

It's very possible that you've just got jammed up. Try to pull HARD to the right while turning the key. You may need to get in there and physically remove the linkage if that doesn't work.

The SKREEM module should be OK as long as it was not attached to the lock cylinder you removed. You'll know if it's not when it starts for 3 seconds, and shuts down with just a red dot on the cluster.

i have to get out to the car to try this, bout to leave. i'll be on my mobile, but i'll be able to check/update from there.

i didn't replace the lock cylinder, but the switch on the other side.

thank you so much for your help on this. i'm only an amateur, but i'm willing to get in there and figure things out and i'm good at being able to follow instructions. just don't have the problem solving when i get beyond my know how.

Yes! This worked! It was jammed and just needed some tugging to get to work. Thank you. Car is back up and running!
