Default Tire Rotation

How do you guys rotate your tires. I've heard of two ways.

1) Back tires go to the front and the front go to the back (they stay on the same side)
2) Back tires go to the front and the front go to the back on the opposite side of the vehicle (front switch sides)

Number 2 is the best choice. Obviously one-directional tires have to go front to back or vice-versa though.

It all a matter of preference. I use 1 most of the time as i don't like to change the rotation of the tire. The wear pattern on the tire is established. I like this method as i feel it produces a more even wear to the tires.

I only do the second tire rotation choice on your everyday goodyear/bridgestone/firestone/etc etc tires..... as there isnt any difference in the tread wear or tread direction

Higher end tires of the $140+ variety...or even good quality performance tires under $100 can have specific tire wear/tire tread patterns that will not give the type of performance if you did not keep them flowing in one direction. Like Z28Stratus said, one directional tires have to follow the #1 pattern rather then #2.

On your everyday tire #1 is not the best choice for even wear because the tire is only in two locations on one side of the car. #2 provides the tire with the longest life, this is the whole point of rotating your tires after all (so they arent in one place and wear evenly). If your right front wears more on the inside, and your front left tire wears more on the outside you'd want every tire to hit every corner to wear evenly. Just say a tire lasts 50k. Each tire will be at each corner twice, for 6,000 miles each time. Eight tire rotations total. They will wear as evenly as possible. You leave the tires on the same sides each tire will be getting the same wear for 25,000 miles. That's not good at all. I'm not trying to argue here, just stating the whole purpose of rotating your tires. Like I said and Devils Reject said obviously 1 directional tires can only go with #1. But then again rotating expensive tires, with very soft rubber, isn't quite as important because most likely you'll wear them out only after a couple tire rotations. I have Goodyear Eagle F1's on my Z28 and I average one year per set. I rotate the back to the front when the back are getting beat up...lol. THen I beat up the the other two. Then it's time for new tires[sm=smiley21.gif]
