Default Mass airflow sensor

2001 Dodge Stratus R/T 3.0 V6 Hello, I was just wondering if anyone can help me. I don't know much (well barely anything) about cars and my Dad doesn't know that much about the computer aspects of them so i was hoping someone here could help us out. Ok well my C/E light comes on and off alot. About 8 months ago my dad took it to autozone and they said it was either a bad air sensor or i needed the fuel cleaner thing (Sorry, i'm not good with the terminology) So, we tryed the fuel cleaner and the light went off for a while. Then about 3 months later it came back on and i never really did anything about it. Should have, but didn't - long story. Then last month i got rear ended and while my car was in the collision shop, they checked it with the computer thing for me and said it was a mass air flow sensor and it cost $400 + free labor. I'm just courious about that because I've been tricked sooo many times by car shops. I could just say ok and take it back there and do what they say or i could try to get some knowledge on this and decide whats best. So, does anyone know if this is a common problem for this car? Is there a cheaper way around it? Can my Dad fix this himself? If so, how? And one last question since i'm already on a roll, could anyone tell me what problems stratus's typically have so i can keep an eye out for them in the future. I already have the bad paint and door not shutting b/c the window stopper thing is loose/broke problems. Wow, i hope at least one person read all the way thru this!! If you did, then thanx!!! Please send lots of info, so I can surprise my dad and make him proud! -------- stephanie

The mass air flow meter is easy to change, its not a real common problem, but it comes around every so often. The Japanese cars have air meter problems because they are mostly the only ones who use them (Your car is a mitsubishi by the way if it is a 2 door Stratus) It takes about 5 - 10 minutes to change. $400 isn't too bad, you might be able to pick one up at the local salvage yard for $50.

and whenh handing it, be VERY careful as to not bend/alter the fins or the "wire" in the middle.
