I wonder does anybody know cost for the timing belt kit with water pump install would be I gues there is a hydraulic actuator incolved and the car being a 1999 Dodge Stratus 2.5LV6 I think that all of the Components would need to be replaced The kit I looked at said something about Without Seals, not sure what that means
Question I would ask is why are you replacing it?
Is it for maintenance because of mileage? .... Good on you.
Or did it break and now needs replaced?
If it broke, then you need to ask if it is a interference motor? ...... the 2.5 liter engine is an interference engine
When the belt breaks the valves can hit the pistons and bend .... now you're pulling the heads and replacing the valves .... sometimes it is cheaper to replace the engine.
No it did not break And I am praying it does not on way to shp[ for timing belt I have been posting on this site many times You are one of the very few to ever respond Thank you Very Much I just finished puting new plugs, and plug wires, a new distributo, ans a new camshaft position sensor on this vehicle My almost completely blind 71 year old Brother (Really good mechanic) had some time to help me fix car. And even then It was a challenge for me to do that After thinking about this last car work on my Stratus I really think I need proffesionals to do the timing belt kit the car has 94,000 miles The Stratus would not start at Grocerystore we had to have it Towed to our Driveway, where it sat for two plus months. This Car has really gotten expensive new fuel pump done at Dodge I put on the Front struts a front and back valve cover gasket done at shops I was afraid to take off the plentum but that turned out to be no problem anyway it sure adds up for a retiree like me. But I am thinking with everything I put into it New Tires Full tank of Gas Just changed oil I think that fixing this car would be worth it compared to trying to buy another used car and hoping nothing would break on the new used car. Oh and By the way this Stratus was suppose yto be the car I never had to work on , well so much for that.
I know what you mean. I'm also retired and have a 1993 Dodge. The car is clean and good condition. Also it was the wife mother car, Father gave it to her when mom passed away.
We have had it for 9 years, transmission was rebuilt has 25K miles on it. Has new fuel pump, struts, shocks, brakes, axles, tires ..... then I installed crank sensor wrong and ruined the engine.
It was just cheaper to replace the engine then buy a used car. ... I bought a used engine with 135K on it. ..... I do all my own work. ...... I finally had all the bugs worked out and really is running nice.
So yesterday I put it back on jack stands and went through all my work checking bolts, adjusted camber and changed the oil .... have 200 miles on the used engine and ready to take it for a good long drive.
Went to start it and appears the starter took a dump on me. ...... I just waked away shaking my head .... maybe tomorrow will look at it.
Is always something with a older car, still cheaper then a monthly car payment and full coverage insurance.
Did you get yours started yet? Knowing you just gave it a tuneup and now it wont start gives some clues.
yes car has started and seens to run very well the engine sounds almost like tapping but maybe it is Clicking I saw on a Scotty K video that a timing belt going out sounds like clicking so I am not driving car until I get the timeing belt ficed Dodge quoted me a $1400 plus but maybe more quote.
I agree with calling around if you know quality shops with a good reputation. With the dealer you know they will do the job correctly.
I do not know about your engine, mine is different A V6 with a chain. The one item that would concern me is the lower crank pulley. Sounds like a simple item.
On my engine the pulley is somehow pressed on .... You need a Biiig puller to get it off. For that reason alone, they will drop the trans-axle out of the vehicle and do the work with the body on the lift in the air and the engine, transmission on the ground where they can get to everything. ..... It is a big job.
I just took mine apart on a blown up engine to see what went wrong, I was not putting it back together. The pulley does not have a slot for a key way is simply extremely tight so it does not spin.
So to re-assemble, you can not just take a 3 pound sledge and drive it back on .... you would damage the crank, bearings, seals etc.... There is a trick to it and some day I will learn it .... I'm thinking to put the pulley in a freezer overnight so it expands then quickly slide it on ????
Only point to bring this up, there will be some things here that if you are not prepared for .... this project could go sideways really fast.
