Default transmission problems help!!

Sorry to join and post with a plea for help as my first post but i really do need some. My best friends car just started acting up engine light is was on for about 3 days. We took it to Autozone and had them check the codes. We got codes P0704 Clutch Switch Input Circuit Malfunction P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfuction. Today the car started to show some really bad signs of tranny failure so i think. The car will jerk then rev up to about 1200rpm when shifting from park to reverse, the same when shifting to drive from reverse. Sometimes it seems like it doesn't catch gear at all cus it just revs up to about 3000rpm and immediately after it will speed up a bit. Right now its not driveable as it will not really go thru the gears properly all the time. You can also hear a whiny noise from the right side of the engine. This is a 2002 Dodge Stratus 2.7L V6 Automatic. Any ideas how to go about it or what to expect when seeing a mechanic? Im trying to make sure he gets a fair deal, we are not 2 car savy as you can probably tell. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? The most important aspect to an automatic transmission
is the fluid. Too little fluid, and you'll have whats called "flairing", when it like revs up high before it shifts.

You may or may not throw codes because of low tranny fluid, but just check that first.....

Are you sure that you got the codes right? There is no such number as P0704. Depending on what the unknown code is you may just have a bad solenoid pack.

I have a 2002 dodge stratus, 4 cylinder. i noticed in my car that there was a whinny noise as well. i had a hard time shifting into different gears and the clutch didn't really have any pressure in it. i ended up having to get a whole new transmission and clutch put in the car. luckily it was still under warrantee so it was covered. why are you looking for a dollar amount as to how much it is to fix?

because the dealer is stating that there is no warranty, trying to get a picture as to the amount. I know its gonna be a few thousand atleast if it comes down to a new tranny, which im really hoping it does not. But everything you said is pretty much on target as to whats happening to this car. Damn. Thanks for all the feedback

my new transmission fell under the 3 year, 36000 mile warranty. let me look at my paperwork to get you an estimate on about how much it will cost. they had to put the new transmission, pressure plate, barring, and clutch in. when i started the car up was when it made that noise. i could tell because of the other things that i mentioned to you, but also because i tested the car out. mine was affecting the lower gears. if you start from a stop and excelerate a lot, try to quick shift into second and then into third. when i did that, my pressure plate would stick. then after driving the car for awhile with it like that, my car would still drive, but the noise got a lot louder and there was nothing to my clutch at all. let me check to see how much mine cost though. i didn't have to pay for it, but they did show that costs for everything on my receipt.
