well a friend of mine has a 98 eclipse gst, he ran into this problem. turns out the turbine inside the turbo was moving around in there beside spinning and spooling and it was making a change in pressure that was sucking oil into the engine, causing the smoke. oil gets into the piping and intercooler as well. wiggle the turbine inside around, if it moves like more than an 1/8- 1/4 inch or so you have a blown turbo. im not sure what causes it but my friend went through two used ones this year. gets a little pricey. i hope this helps
did you buy the turbo used? if so, i would assume that youve either done something wrong in the install, or the turbo seals are bad, which is what indigo said...
installed everything myself.........stock internals with new head gasket and a rebuilt head.
i was told the turbo is wastegated(internally) at 7psi.

is the turbo water cooled?
if its smoking that bad, you could always remove the turbo...and button it up NA, and if its still smoking, its the motor...if it stops, the turbo is bad. was there any shaft play? how big of a turbo are you running? no boost gauge?

i have a boost and oil pressure guage.... anyways i think i got the problem sorted, got 180psi compression on all 4 cylinders, and most the smolking has stopped after a long drive. I'm thinking that installing one of those oil catch cans between the PVC valve and manifold will do the trick, that is my best guess as to where the oil is getting in.
Had the same problem with a 95 sohc 5 speed neon. we got screwed by a local shop when they decided to do a backyard turbo install for us instead of letting us know that they had no idea how to install a turbo. (I should post pics). any way, We didnt have any extra fuel to support the boost, the fins on the turbo looked like someone threw a wrench into the turbine while it was spining. Nothing was done on the computer side (aobe, missing link), o2 sensor from whatever car the turbo was taken from was still in the sway pipe and we couldnt get it out so there it stayed not connected to anything. At around 6k rpm when we shifted, a cloud of smoke big enough to cover a small town would shoot out of the tail pipe. We never got a chance to narrow down the problem but I feel better having shared that with everyone.
