Replacing the stater
Always remove the negative battery cable to avoid shorting out your battery!
What's wrong with the starter? Does it not turn over or is it dead altogether? If it won't turn over (only a click heard when you turn the key) then it may simply be the contacts are worn out and that the actual starter armature is OK. I fixed a starter that had this problem for about $1.50 simply by fashioning my own contacts out of some copper stock - worked like a charm after that. Beat spending $200 on a new starter.
I have also found that the Haynes manual is a good reference for doing these types of jobs. Pick one up if you don't have one already.
Good luck,
taco
