Default 18" rims or lowering springs?

While thinking about getting bigger rims or not and lowering the car, I was wondering if one would interfere with the other. Bigger rims would fill up the wells better but if I lower the car first I might have to worry about lowering the car too farforthe bigger rims to fit. When you get the stance right on these cars, they look amazing, as I've seen from a number of members' rides inhere. I'll most likely look for 18's AND lower the car a bit, so some tips will really help.

Also, is it a pain to find the right spacers to get the rear wheels flush with the fender well?
