Default 97 2.4L rough idle

98,000 miles. Just had the timing belt changed. The car now runs rough only at curb idle, you dont notice anything wrong above about 1000 rpm. Took it back to the place and they couldnt find anything wrong with it. They even threw a set of new plug wires on it.

I scoped the cam sensor (REALLY oily) and the pattern looked good, but im wondering if there could be an issue with oil contaminating the sensor. I havent pulled the sensor yet. No codes from the PCM either.

Is this a common problem?

Thanks,
Erik

Are there any TSBs relating to this?

try replacing the sensor seal. before you reinstall the sensor, clean the oil off it. good luck.

I assume the sensor seal is whats referred to as a cam seal? About $5 ?

not sure what the name for it is, never had to mess around with a 2.4 motor. should look like an "O" (could be wrong) and go around the sensor, creating a seal between the sensor, the valve cover, and the head. if this don't fix the prob, i'm thinking the t-belt was installed a tooth off, as the car ran good before the belt was changed, right?

Yeah the motor ran fine before the belt was changed. It still runs fine above idle. I thought it would run rough all the time if the timing belt was one tooth off.

sounds like a egr valve not sealing when shut. real common and easy to overlook.
