Default Considering '98 GTS, a few ?s

I've wanted a Viper since they came out and played the OG Need for Speed(good game BTW).

There is a '98 GTS at a local car dealership and had a few questions about it. First, it has side pipes which are obviously custom, is there any power benefit from this?? If I buy it, I will probably end up getting the rear exhaust put back on, how expensive will new side skirts be??

Also, This car looks clean, has a few minor blemishes but has a roll cage/4pt harnesses and the aforementioned custom exhaust.. with only ~6k miles. The rims are stock, but it has kuhmos all the way around which aren't new...this strikes me as a little odd for a car that is supposed to have 6k miles.

Another thing that caught my attention is the fact that the rear calipers do not match the front...the front are the stock Viper which have "Viper" written on them...the rear look completely different, and not in a good way like they were upgraded or something. Is this stock????

Knowing this car was raced doesn't bother me much as I have the know how to completely rebuild the drivetrain. Structural damage is a different story though. I've read where there are recalls of weak points showing up on Vipers that were driven hard, from what I can see everything looks OK. The brake rotors look very good and may actually be new as there is very litte rust on the hats.

Is there anything specifically I should watch out/listen for when I check it out when the dealership is open?? What is a good price for said Viper??

This IS the year Viper I want due to the forged pistons and hotter cam(compared to 99+).

Thanks for any info!

As for the exhaust conversion, to go back will be costly. If you want stock sills you are looking at 5K, give or take for the sills. Plus the exhaust. With that said you can get aftermarket sills for about $1200 from autoform and a few other places. Also, EBay has occasional used sills. You will not gian or loose any performance with side or full exhaust as long as it is a quality system.

Tires are not shocking. Given the roll cage and harness sounds as if the owner liked to play and the Kumos hook better.

Ha..I would if it were a GTS!

Wow...5K for sills?!?
$1200 seems much more reasonable, is there a noticeable difference in qualty/fit from the OEM to aftermarket?

I have a set of sills from a 96 GTS that are almost perfect in condition and I have the exhaust pieces you need to return it to a stock rear exit setup... and it wont cost you anywhere near $5K! So if you end up with that 98 let me know.

Also as for the weakness in the structure, there was a recall for the vipers that added supports to the front and rear of the undercarriage that added strength to fix the problems. Check with the dealer to see if the recall has been performed on that particular Viper.

...by the way the aftermarket sill/exhaust covers are usually fiberglass which will always be inferior to the OEM aluminum ones... especially where durability is concerned.
