Painting Question
Hi, I will be painting my 92 Ram w150. I am wondering if anyone knows how much paint I will need (primer, base, clear) to get full coverage with a few coats (clear being about 3-4 coats) I do not plan on painting the bed at all as I will be doing a spray liner. I was thinking maybe a gallon of each except maybe a little more clear. Anyone who has painted their ram before please let me know what you think.
That all depends on the brand of product your using, your skill level, and your equipment. What type of gun are you using and whats it efficiancy? does it give off a lot of overspray?
I use Dupont products, and i would suggest no primer, unless you have body work to repair, 1/2 - 3/4 gallon sealer (reduced), depending on your color and size of truck i would go with about 3/4 - 1 gallon base color ( not reduced) and as far as clear coat 3-4 coats of clear is over kill unless you are color sanding and buffing. for 2 coats of clear i would go with a gallon and a half (unreduced). These are all based on a reg cab short box, painting the truck, inside of doors and door jambs, no under hood or inside of bed....And my amounts may be off but its a starting point.
If you decide to go with 3-4 coats of clear, lay your first two coats down then let you clear cure for 48 hours, resand it then lay your other 2 coats of clear... if you try to do all 4 coats at once you will get vapour blisters popping through your clear.
Good luck.

heres a List
I f you are going Base/Clear you will need atleast 2 gallons to be safe.
1. HVLP gun
2. Compressor that can hold up to spraying a truck
3. Patience
For primer I suggest a urethane primer surfacer (sandable) for about 2 coats.and sand it smooth
All primer is is to fill the imperfections of the steel or body filler
As for color you should spray 2- 4
Clearcoat if you want to not worry about cutting through the clear with buffing I suggest 5 coats with proper flashtime for each coat ( stay away from Strato-clear by PPG it is very prone to running)
When you spray clear DO NOT try to make it shine when you spray it becuase you might just get runs and runs.
I have shot PPG's DBC, DBU, enamellines I have shot Omni Urethanes, enamels, base/clears, I have shot Sherwins 3rd deminsion enamels which is terribleI think. Good luck man
