5.7 HEMI a real HEMI?
After finally seeing one up close and tore down at my local dealers shop i was surprised by what i saw. First i noticed the heads, twin rocker shafts per head, aka old HEMI, deepskirt cast iron block, also old HEMI. But unlike the old HEMI's the new 5.7 has more or less flat top pistins! The tech said that they couldn't get it to run on reg pump gas with domed pistons so they went with a lower compression ratio that gave it the ability to run on reg and mid grade as well as better emissions. On a side note the 6.1 HEMI has domed pistons like the old HEMI's, and like the old reguires premium gas to run detonation free. I put some good pics of the 5.7 HEMI and the drawing for the 426ci HEMI. I could not find any of the 6.1. So lets hear it!

RE: 5.7 HEMI a real HEMI?
If you step back from the emotions
...put away good or bad for a moment...
the amazing thing about the 5.7 Hemi
is how the marketing department
'influenced' public opinion about it.
"Hemi' is a distinctly American name
that calls back 'glory days' of industry
of the 1960s.
The 5.7 V8 was always destined to be built
in a Mexican factory, and further it is
assembled of 'modules' instead of loose parts.
These 'modules' are built mostly at
non-UAW factories of low-bid suppliers.
Chrysler's Marketing executives countered any
bad feelings and gripes about this
...by bringing back the "HEMI" name
and tying it to this new Mexican engine
and repeating Hemi, Hemi, Hemi in advertisements.
This gave the 5.7 V8 a shell of protection
and shifting the customer from thinking about
how and where Chrysler was building this engine.
Other automotive companies...Ford, GM, Toyota
are HIGHLY impressed with the 5.7 Hemi
but what they are impressed about
is how cheaply this engine is made
and the large profits that it earned
in its first 3 years.
Chrysler has publicly said they can build
this V8 in Mexico
for less than they can build the 3.7 V6 in the USA.
Again...before getting angry about this
consider that Chrysler's financial condition is dire
and they do need profits.
The guy who directed most of this
Tom LaSorda
is the son of Canadian UAW vice presidents..both mom and dad.
