Default Pinging?

Hey guys, I've got a problem with my 99 dakota. It seems as though everytime i give it gas in gear, that it starts pinging once over like 2500. Any info that could remedy the problem? I've tried puttin' 89 octane in it, i'm afraid to even suggest there would be something wrong with the timing. Thanks again in advance!
