Belt Squealing - 99 Ram 2500
Hey everyone, got something here that I'm not too sure what to do. I noticed semi-recently ago that when my truck first starts up, usually after its been sitting overnight or for at least 8 hours or so, the belt starts squealing really bad but would go away within about 5 mins or so of running. Just yesterday I started it up, same thing, but the squaling isn't going away any more. Has about 61K on it, I bought it used about 15K ago and I'm not sure if that belt has ever been replaced. Is that a sign that I should replaced that belt soon? Also are there any other maint. things I should check into getting replaced?
You can look at the belt and see what kind of shape it's in. On the groved side, see if there are any little cracks in the rubber. If there are, it's time to be changed. If it's a MoPar belt, there's a chance it could still be stock. I only get about 30K on my belts. When you change the belt make sure the idler pulley rolls free. Other than that just change the belt.
Those belts start to show stress crackes in no time at all.Because the belt is stressed one way over the ribbed pulley ,then stressed the other way over the smooth pulley. But like mopartodd said check your idler,I am on my third one. Also slowly pull the idler arm back and forth. They like to seize on the shaft.
