Dakota R/T Heads
My buddy is giving me his stock heads off his '99 R/T he used to have, so i will have a somewhat fresh top end...hope the cam is alright...I won't know what to do having the power it had when i bought it again....the guy doing the swap on my truck said the compression was terrible, both my heads were cracked and the gaskets were shot!!! I owe my friend big time and i hope that all of you have a friend as good as mine...
Make sure the heads are checked out for cracks and straight surfaces, valve guides for were and new seals, valve and seat wear. No sense in doing the job halfway while it's apart. Those are some nice heads. If you can swing it, you should have someone port them.
He only has 10k on the motor and it should be alright. The shop I have it in has all the tools to resurface the heads and do any valve work. I wish I had the money to have it ported, but if I had that kind of money I would be putting mopar performance R/T heads on it with a fat cam....i'm going for the driveability and I just don't want it to smoke when I drive it anymore....I should see more power increase from the CAI and Flows due to the increase in compression. Thankx for the input
I got my truck back last Tuesday and it runs AWESOME!!!! I didn't realize how bad it was....while in the shop I put on a new harmonic dampner and pulley, new champion plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor bug, thermostat, new radiator hoses.....The truck runs great, I have never sat at a light and had no vibration other than the exhaust...it runs very smooth, and power seems significantly increased, but I havn't really got on it cuz I wanted to make sure the valves seat proplerly (not sure how long to do it, but i'm just going to take it moderatly easy for the 1st tank).
I don't know if you realize this or not, but the Dakota R/T's heads are the EXACT same heads that are on EVERY 5.2L and 5.9L Magnum motor. They are NOT special R/T heads. Your "new" heads will flow the same as your "old" heads.
