Pitted front rotors
I've been having problems with a grinding/rubbing noise whenever I turn my '93 2wd Dakota a the way to the left. Right when the steering won't turn anymore I get a grinding/rubbing noise from the front driver wheel. I took the wheel off last night to look for the problem and I found that the rotors on both sides had little pits on only the back sides. The driver side was worse than the passenger and the biggest pits were about pea sized. Fronts of both rotors seemed fine. I know I have to get new rotors/pads. Does anyone know what might cause this to occur??
i doubt that your grinding/rubbing is related to pitted rotors. for now, i'd worry more about the grinding than the rotors. get the front up on jack stands and have assistant turn steering wheel while you check all parts including tie rods, ball joints, bearings. grab wheel at top and bottom and wiggle. grab wheel at left and right and wiggle. should be very very little, almost no play. have your got normal (non sealed) wheel bearings in the outside and inside of hub/rotor. check those. if never replaced, its probably time.
pitted rotors may be imperfections in the metal. might have been there forever. poor mans drilled/slotted rotors
