Default Timing on a modded 360...

Hi, I have an issue... i have a 360 small block and I have hedman headers, Edelbrock Performer seires dual plane intake, Lunati Voodoo Camshaft with .475/.494" Lift and 256/262 degree duration, Holley 600CFM Vacuum Secondaries Carburetor, Mallory Uni-Lite Distributor, running 14Y's for the plugs, have Accel 8mm plug wires. my problem is that when i time it to 10-12 degrees Static timing and i rev it up it sounds great!! works awesome... but then when i plug back in the Vacuum Advance my upper rpm's @3500 on up to 6000 is just choppy, not all the power it can get... Now it's wintertime up here in Northern Wisconsin and it's in my daily driver truck and i put in some Iso-Heet to take care of any water and i removed my Fuel Filter and sprayed it out just incase there was any water that accumalated in there.. I am running 89 Octane (10% ethanol) and i added a Lucas Octane Booster this seemed to clear it up a little bit but not enough... for my timing my distributor is at 20 degrees fully advanced at 3,000 rpm. Right now i'm set at 11 degrees Static timing off of idle so i should be running at a total of 31 degrees advance... now i have also tried timing with vacuum advance plugged in at a little above 3000 so everything is totally set to see if it is at 31 degrees advance or somehwere close and i do not see my mark at all...

What i would like to know is if anyone has any suggestions on what i could try different? anybody have a different number for starting out timing with my mods? Let me know! Thanks!

~Woody

I always go by total timing .My 360 LA is close to your set up. With 9.5-1 compression I limit it to 38 deg. total timing. But if it pings back it down .You can also reshape the advance curve with different springs. You will also find a number stamped on the arm of of the vaccuum pot.Swap in different numbered stock pots.
