Default Engine Misfiring

I own a 1989 VW Polo, and recently I've been having trouble when driving above 55mph, in 4th gear. I think the term is misfiring - it sometimes goes very jerky and refuses to accelerate. I have to slow down, shift down to 3rd gear, and accelerate up again. Sometimes it's okay after doing this, but at other times I have to drive for a good couple of minutes in 3rd gear (at high speeds) before I can go back up again. I mainly have this problem on dual carriageway or motorway. It's worse up hill - even only a slight incline. I put some Redex in the fuel to make sure the filters weren't dirty, but as I know very little about cars, I don't know what to do next. I don't have much money however so if it's soemthing I can easily attempt to fix without taking it to a mechanic, I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks, Davey

WHy do we get these questions? I've never worked on a VW, although I have seen many on fire. Maybe the people who own them can help you. Good luck.

because they know that we were smart enough to buy DCX products, so we must know about cars.

We know about buying reliable cars, not something you have to fix often.

Oh, that's funny... Let me look thru the monsterous stack of reciepts for my Ram... [sm=icon_beat.gif]

I agree with your point. Maybe I should check with a VW forum on why my Ram is squirrely.

The easiest way to fix your problem is to buy a Dodge.
