95 Lumina Trans Woes
My stepson has a 95 Lumina with the 3.1 auto. Last week his trans went out on him. Started out by jumping out of gear while he was driving and the next day it wouldn't engage reverse. It does shift manually into first but will jump back out of gear at around 35mph once you put it in D.
He called a couple of shops and was quoted ~1600. I haven't called anywhere yet cause I've been working my tail off.
Does this seem high for a rebuilt trans install or is it the going rate?
For that price it's almost easier getting him another beater to drive. I need to do something quick cause he's drivingmy SHO back and forth to work.
thanks in advance

Well it may be cheaper to buy another beater, but you always run the risk of getting a piece of **** that only lasts a week. Atleast repairing this car you know the history of it. If it has a good engine that you feel can give many more years of life id say go for the tranny. But I guess it all depends on how good of shape this car is in.

Some shops quote you high prices to include warranties as well as the labor/work. You might consider calling around to some junkyards and getting a transmission from one. That's what I did for my 96 Beretta. Paid $450 for the transmission and took me a weekend to do the work by myself. It's not hard to do, just time involved and you need a garage.
FYI - The transmission that the 3.1 V6 bolts up to is notorious for having the gear casing blow out because of the way its designed. They dont use quality parts. I had mine rebuilt with performance parts and I could literally tell a difference.
