Default what makes a motor backfire?

idk i was just thinkin what exactly makes this happen. no1 i run with can give me a stright answer. i hav herd that if the carb is messed up it sends to much gas and this can cause a backfire, but i hav also herd that if the timing is wrong the plug fires when the valve is not quite shut. can any1 just give me a stright answer?

Maybe there is a leak. Probably where the muffler meats the engine.

either:
get a spray bottle with some soapy water, spray the exhaust, start it up and look for bubbles
or take a close look for some carbon stains.....black soot that has no business being on the outside of your pipe.

either way, squirt some RTV (any auto parts store) on the leak, problem solved.

and while you are at it, change your plug / clean the air filter
