Default Steering column noise

The steering column in my 2001 Ram 3500 is making a clicking noise whenever the wheel is turned in either direction. The noise has been getting slowly worse. The Dodge dealer says its the bearings in the steering column and I need a new column (although he says it is probably not a safety issue at the moment). He says the job will cost $1100 for a new column and labor. Does this sound reasonable? Is this a common problem in these trucks? Anyone else have this happen? Also - we tow a trailer with the truck. Any info would be appreciated. Elaine

I got a problem of a clicking as well but was told it was my steering pump by my uncle and brother in law who are both mechanics... My wheel only gets hard to turn when I am going less then five miles an hour. Like to parallel park is impossible.

Depending on how good you are mechanically, you should be able to pick it up from a junk yard for maybe $300-$400 and do it yourself, its not that hard of a job.
