Default 45RFE Tranny Hunting BIG TIME!!!

Just bought a new '04' 2500 ram the dealer still had on the lot. It has a Hemi with the 5 speed auto and a 3.73 rear. It was bought to tow a 2 horse trailer, which it should do. I hooked up and headed out for a test drive, before turning my wife or mother loose with this thing. when I got on the Interstate and wound it up to 67mph and kicked on the cruise, the trans started to HUNT. This thing was shifting between 3rd and 4th gear every 2sec. in tow/haul mode. the trailer only weighs 3000#, so the truck should handle it. Anybody else have this problem? I read somewhere else on these forums that there was aTSB and a tranny FLASH. AT the risk of sounding extremely stupid. Is aTSB, a service bullitain, and what is a tranny Flash? does it work? does the Dealer do this? Cost? any info would be apreciated.

TSB= Technical Service Bullitin. The tranny flash is reprograming the computer for the transmission. And yes the dealer does it. If there is a TSB on it the dealer should do it for free.

I have had better luck towing without the cruise control.

Pulled the 30 foot camper all over and using CC it downshifts and upshifts more than I felt combfortable with.
Without CC on I am able to keep the speed and RPMs relatively consistent.

Mileage is better while towing without CC on as well.

2004 (PL) Neon

2004 (RS) Caravan/Voyager/Town & Country
2004 (RG) Chrysler Voyager (International Markets)

NOTE: This Bulletin Applies To Vehicles Equipped With 41TE, 42RLE or 45RFE Transmissions.

Discussion:
When servicing an automatic transmission on any of the vehicles listed above, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) displayed relating to transmission solenoids, may be misleading. The following DTC’s: P0755, P0750, P0760, P0765, P0770, P2706, could be displayed indicating solenoid faults when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is actually at fault. If any of these DTC’s are encountered, Check the Powertrain Control Module manufacture date. The date is shown in the Module Serial Number on the label attached to the front of the module. The serial number is a 14 digit alpha numeric code which is located on the bottom of the part label. A sample of the number is shown below:

MODULE S/N T65EH2333D55N6

The manufacture date code is shown in the 6th through 9th digits. In this case the manufacture date code would be: H235 3 (Day of the Year - Year) day 235 of year 2003. If any of these DTC’s are present and the PCM manufacture date code is between H2313 and H2393 The fault is likely to be in the PCM. Replace the PCM and check for any other DTC’s before replacing the solenoids. The “H†in the code indicates modules built in Huntsville. This bulletin applies only to Huntsville Modules.

Thanks Guys, I found the TSB at Dodgeram.info (that sure is a handy site). It was under, VEHICLE PERFORMANCE, TSB# 18-041-04. I guess I will call the Dealer and give them a chance to fix it, before I drive it through there front window. I'll let you know how it goes.

Your response reminded me of the old Discount Tire commercial.
Hopefully it will be a quick fix and you will be enjoying some of the customer waiting room donuts and coffee.
