Lost signal to speedometer and more
Hello to all. I have read some of the past posts to the list and it is very informative. I have a 1999 Dakota SLT extended cab with the V6 Engine. Here's my problem...
So I'm driving down the road with my cruise control on and all is fine. All of a sudden the cruise drops off. I look at my instrument panel and the speedometer is at zero and my ABS and Brake warning lights are on. I look down again and the Speedometer is working but both ABS and Brake warning lights are still on. When I got to where I was going, I pulled the fuse for the ABS in the drivers side dash fuse access panel, the fuse looked good but put in a new fuse since I didn't have a meter with me to properly check. Start the truck again, and everything (warning lights) is working properly. Go back on the road and again the ABS and Brake warning lights come on but this time the Speedometer doesn't work at all. I'm thinking there is a common relay or sensor somewhere. What do you think?
I have a Haynes book but it does not show any schematics (that I found anyhow) for the
ABS/Brake light and speedometer.
Has anyone had this problem? Can you direct me to a good source for a
schematic diagram or a part that may have failed and where it is located?
Any and all responses are more than welcome.
Thanks to all ahead of time.
Charlie

Likely cause is a failed Wheel Speed Sensor (rear). This sensor is located on the top of the rear differential housing. It uses a tone wheel on the differential carrier to send a wheel speed signal to the RWAL or ABS module. That message is broadcast to other modules over the communications BUS.
Ken,
Thanks for responding and you are absolutely correct it was the sensor located on top of the differential, I finally figured it out. $41 at the dealer and 15 minutes to install and I was back on the road............Charlie

I am having the same problem with my 99 dodge ram 1500. I had tried to remove the sensor on the differential and it acts like it doesn't want to come out. Is it pressed on there? How would I remove it? Do I have to buy the sensor at the dealership or is it available at a parts supply? Also, according to Haynes manual, I tested the brakes at the combination valve and the front brakes "nipple" is coming out, but the "nipple" for the rear brakes is not pushing out. Would I have to replace the whole combination valve or can you just try to blow them out or something?
Forgot to add. The engine light came on about 10 miles after the ABS and brake light and then the speedometer dropped and the whole "computer" seemed to reset. The truck almost stalled. Now the truck is running ok, but not tops. We took the truck to AZ to get a reading on the code. Said it was a Vehicle Speed Sensor. So we replaced it, unhooked the battery for about 20 minutes (ABS/Brake light still came back on when I turned the ignition on) and then drove it about 10 miles. The speedometer was still not working until I got off the interstate and then all of the sudden it started working until I got home and turned the engine off. Engine light is now back on along with the ABS/Brake light (no speedometer reading). Took the truck back to AZ and they pulled the code again and it was VSS. Any ideas??
I 2nd the thank you. Sulution worked for me as well. 98' Ram1500 4x4 Lights went off right away & speedometer works fine now. $41 fix. Thank you guys.
