I just bought an 01 1500 and was told it had a 5.9 liter. I dont see any identifying marks on the engine itself and havent found an engine ID number or how to decipher it if i found it. The vin number checks out that it is a 5.9 but so far today ive heard "that looks small(the engine guys, the engine)" and "my 5.9 doesnt look like that". My brother has a 96 1500 with the 5.2 and it looks identical to the engine i have. I was curious to find out if there are any physically identifiable features to tell the difference, so far I've found no pictures so I figured i would ask here. Thanks for any help in advance, I appreciate it.

I think its the 5.9, I don't think they make a 5.2 anymore.

 

VIN 8th digit x=3.9 y=5.2 z=5.9 all available in 01 br models also factory installed sticker on front of left valve cover indicating engine size, underhood emissions sticker also has engine size printed on it, finally, if engine replacement is suspected the engine cid is cast into the side of the block, a flashlight and a creeper will answer for sure
*** added note *** 5.2 and 5.9 appear identical from the outside to the untrained eye

 

Cool, thanks guys, the underhood emissions sticker was covered up by a factory recall sticker for a pcm change on the 5.9 which was another clue that it was a 5.9 and I checked the left valve cover and it says 5.9, tomorrow I'll check the casting number just to be certain but nothing indicates that there was replacement since the engines look identical basically.
