Default General Diagnostic Questions

Hope this is the right forum.

I have some general questions about vehicle diagnostic tests:
I've read some articals that seem to imply that hand held or laptop computers can be used to run diagnostic tests on a vehicle. My questions :

Can a Palm Pilot (or similar) computer be used for automotive diagnostic tests.

Can automotive diagnostic software be loaded onto a Palm Pilot or laptop ?

If so - Are adapters available to connect a Palm Pilot the test connection on particular vehicles ?

Any answers or links with basic answers and/or instructions on this would be appreciated. This is a new area of interest to me.

Thanks - any help appreciated.

A laptop... yes. My buddy owns a garage, and has a laptop that can hook up to the diagnostic plug under the dash. However, I believe he paid a bundle for the software, and the connectors. IMO, your best bet is to buy a unit special for diagnostics. I have used them before, and if you work on cars often, it's worth the bucks. http://www.autocodelink.com/ is a site with a few different tools to check out. As far as PDA's, You'd need a hell of a memory stick to hold the software. And I'm not sure if they make plugs for that yet.

Thanks

Don't know if it would be worth the price - I only maintain 2 vehicles.
Just hate to have to pay $40 - $60 everytime I need a diagnostic run.

Cheers
