Electrical Problems
A week ago while driving my 2001 Dodge Durango, someone cut me off forcing me to slam hard on my brakes. I avoided hitting the car, but instantly began having strange computer/electrical problems. Various warning lights turn on and off including the Engine Light, Air Bag light, Security Light, and Brake light. Also, the word No BuS appears in the milage display. This problem goes away, but perioidically returns after 30 minutes or so. Some days there is no problem, the next day the various lights flash on and off non-stop. The car seems to drive fine, however. I figure something must have been shorted, or knocked out of place from the force of stopping so hard. I have no idea if there is anything I can check myself before having to spend a lot of money having a diagnostic performed. Any suggestions would be great.
This sounds like you have a loose connection at the BCM or Body Control Module or a CTM Central Timer Module but I'm not sure where they are located. Maybe down near your feet under the dash? Might be able to get a pic from the Dodge parts guy.
The "no bus" message is probably the root of your problem. Each module on the vehicle communicates with other modules by a one or two wire bus system. If the wire becomes grounded or open then communication is lost and each module will turn on it's malfunction lamp. I don't think an aggressive stop would cause this problem, but you should probably have a good electical mechanic look at it.
