Default Cant pass inspection.

Hey all, new member...

We're having a problem with our 1997 Dodge Ram (318 V8, automatic). It will not pass inspection because the inspection stations computer cannot connect/communicate with the computer in our Dodge, and so it fails. The station computer just sits there trying to communicate until is eventually times out and quits trying. We've had this problem for some time, actually...I've looked all over the OBD plug and its intact, no damaged/broken wires. I replaced the dash last weekend, and all the wires underneath are in fine condition. The cig lighter is also connected and working...I heard that might affect it...Also, the Check Engine light is not on, and the truck runs fine...

So, what can I do, if anything, to figure this out? This truck is OBDII isnt it? My Haynes manual says 1994-1997 is OBDI but it also says 1996+ is OBDII...and so does American law.

It could be your computer is having a stroke and needs to be reprogrammed. As much as I hate to admit it this may be best left up to the Dodge garage. Eeeek![sm=insomnia.gif]
If this is a true communications error then their test equipment should pick it up.
Only other thing I can think of is disconnecting the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes and see if that resets anything.

Yea...

Battery thing I dont think will work. Battery was disconnected for 3 days while I replaced the upper dash panel this past weekend. Truck was inspected Wednesday this week I think. In an attempt to save money, we're looking for a used Dodge 318/Automatic/2x4 computer to put in the truck to see if that does anything to help.

Might also try www.car-part.com for a used computer.

Try another station or go straight to the dealer
I drive a coach bus and the shop has the ob-ll software
its said it is for all ob-ll vehicles but yet it cant link up
works on certain cars/years mechanic said might be a software problem.

I have a 98 dodge neon. For some reason, I am assuming its an OBD 1, the emmisions station that I went to can not read my computer. I told them to read it as an OBD-1 and it worked. Just an off the wall idea. It could be a bad PCM, but that is very rare if the car is running good.

Already tried a couple stations. Same problem.

Casper: Yea...the Haynes manual saying that 1997's could be OBDI or OBDII and all that mess is confusin me. I might as well try that and see if it passes under OBD I scan. Worth a shot...
