Default May 2004 Update to Synthetic Oil Study

The most recent test results for the ongoing test of the two biggie synthetic oils, Mobil 1 and Amsoil are available at http://oilstudy.spacebears.com

It's getting interesting...

This is a great comparison, but it still has pluses and minuses. The Mobil 1 was in for the first life of this motor, so it will naturally have more metal in it. If only they could have 2 identical vehicles with identical drivers and driving time and conditions, but that would be impossible. What they need to do is continue this testing for a second go around with each oil to give them both a better fairer chance, then average each oils results with their previous run. This would help to eliminate the possible arguments as to these pluses and minuses.[sm=smiley2.gif]

Yeah, you KNOW there's going to be arguments about the results. Still, I find the initial test results showing more wear protection for Amsoil interesting and well as the fact that it's now as thick as a 40 weight oil...

Yeah, that and the TBN. As I mentioned about the metals already, there will indeed be arguments about it. Thats why I wish they would do the 2nd round to help eliminate some of it.

I have read it correctly, Amsoil's kinematic viscosity (5w-30, 10w-30) is already close to being a low 40 weight oil. Mobil 1 is actually closer to being a high 20 weight oil to begin with.

I enjoy using this study to prove synthetic oil does last longer than petroleum oils. Since the study is not truly scientific, the results can't be equally compared on all aspects of the testing.

I agree, this should help do away with all those non-believers...and since virtually every scientific study in any discipline can be critiqued from some aspect or angle, "studies" or "tests" done by anyone or any "independent" lab are open to interpretation...[&:]

Just a personal note, I checked the oil in my OCC...it looks like it should, it smells like it should, darn it, it just shouldn't be there!!!!![:'(]

And the plot continues to thicken.....and apparently so does the Amsoil.[sm=smiley36.gif] It's TBN will probably level off though.

Really.[sm=smiley36.gif]

I hope so, I plan to run it in my next oil change, but of course the max miles I'll be putting on the Amsoil is 3,000 and it held up well to that point. The wear was even less than the Mobil 1, if I read the numbers right.

I'll post MY "test results" after that!!![sm=smiley36.gif]
