Help my Ram! How can I lower NOx for smog check?
Hey guys,
Holland calling. Please read on, I'm in big trouble here.
My pride and glory is a '96 Ram 2500 longbed with a fat Cummins Diesel. I love the black beast.
Which is why I bought it in Nevada early this year, and had it shipped to Holland, where I live.
Now I can't drive it. Can't get it smogged here.
According to the authorities, the NOx-level (2.05) is way over their limit.
And this is a car that passed California smog checks!
I don't have a clue what NOx is. All I know is the car runs great, no smoke. But these bureaucrats are now presenting me with the choice of
a) scrapping the car
b) shipping it back to the States.
I'm tearing my hair out and demand a re-test, of course.
Before I ask for one - do any of you know how I can get this NOX-level down?[X(]

Welcome to DF. Just add on another catalytic converter or two, that should clean up your exhaust more than enough to pass any emissions check. It will rob you of a little horsepower, but you will be able to keep it there.
well...NOx is produced ffrom overheating in the combustion chanber itself...so there are a few options that you can try here...gooo ahead and get a injector service done...the chemicals in the injector cleaner will probobly be able to break up the carbon on the pistons, then it will be harmlessly expelled through the exhaust...otherwise youlll have to bust off the head and fiddle around to find the cylinder that is firing so hot. Maybe you have a burnt valve that is always letting fuel into the chanber?...who knows, but try the injector/induction cleaner...but dont get one from a store to do yourelf...unless it is in a steel can. Plastic containers are not strong enough to hold the chemicals
