Default Oil Dipstick Tube makes a Gurgle Sound

2000 Dodge Intrepid ES
Purchased used 3 months ago
3.2 L

A week ago I went and changed the oil. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, no metal, not burnt abnormally, no bad smell, nothing. After that, cold starts have a lot of valve lifter tapping for about 30 seconds then it's normal. (I figured this was due to me using 10 w 40 instead of the recommended 10 w 30)

Last night a warning light came on, it looks like an engine outline so I figure its the service engine soon / check engine light.

Investigating the light I noticed a weird gurgling sound with the hood up. Investigating the sound I found it was coming from the engine oil dipstick tube. The gurgling happens continuously while running and will continue after the engine stops turning - maybe until all pressures are equal to atmosphere..

I checked for leaks, there are no leaks. The oil level is normal (between the high and low level lines after sitting ; while running it's right at the low line). I pulled the vacuum manifold tube and checked to see if that was it but no dice (i thought maybe this tube was for crank case gases).

There is no oil in the radiator overflow nor do I see any antifreeze when I check the oil.

I guess there are a few questions here:

1. Is this sound normal?
2. If not, what could cause the gurgling?
3. Secondarily, how can I reset the codes to see if it comes on again and to get a clean read from a OBD II reader?

Thanks all... I really appreciate everyone reading and applying thought to this dilema.

Hi,

I have never heard of this happening and I really hope that your oil is not boiling however, have you checked your PCV valve? Perhaps your engine is 'breathing' through the only way it can...if your PCV valve is stuck shut...

Just a wild guess...
