we have a 1985 ramchager with a 318. we have had several problems with the cooling systm. we replaced the water pump and the freeze plugs. now we replaced the thermostat. now our mechanic is saying it needs a head gasket. is there any way of telling if it is the head gasket. please let me know thank you. we also own a 74 duster and a 84 ramcharger.

1. Check to see if there is any white smoke coming out the exhaust?

2. Then check the oil dipstick to see if there is any antifreeze mixed with it. It will be a brownish color.

3. Also you can slowly remove the drain plug on the oil pan after sitting over night and see if there is any antifreeze that comes out because oil will float on water so the antifreeze will come out first. But don't take the plug all the way out so you loose your oil.

4. check the side of the motor to see any antifreeze is dripping out from the head gasket mounting surface.

These will tell you if you have a leaking head gasket.

You might just have a plugged up radiator, or a bad fan clutch.
