Default 2005 Daytona Pace Truck (trans problems)

I have 3210 mile on my 2005 Daytona Pace truck. I only use it to pull my boat to the lake (round trip 33 miles). I have had the engine light come on twice now, and have noticed that it seems to come on after I come to a complete stop, and start again. It seems to not shift into 1st gear, and starts in second. After shuting off the engine, and starting again, all seems great. (no engine light on, and it shifts great). I'm not hard on anything I drive, and this truck is no exception. Before I take it in for troubleshooting, please give me the facts. My last truck lasted me 23 years, before someone gave me enough$$$$ to justify selling it. So I have no electronic/computer automotive experience.

1)Error codes: Are they stored over a period of time, how many, are they date/time stamped?
2) what makes a Transmission tick, When does it know when to shift, What does Tow/hauling mode do to the transmission.
3) I have read a few threads on this forum and see there are a lot of peeps giving alot of advice, but much of it has no base (I hope these guys are not the dodge machanics from my dealership).

What is the best way to read error codes? I heard Auto zone has a reader? Is there any got you's reading error codes. Are there high failure rates with dodge transmission sensors?

3000 miles on a truck and having real intermittant problems is making me think. I live in Phoenix Arizona. Which dealership, service advisor, Mechanic should I be looking for? I am really disappoint so far with what I have seen. There must be a high turn over rate of mechanics and service advisors.

If a code sets the CEL light, it's usually stored in memory for the next 55 starts before it is erased. The first thing to do when diagnosing a problem is to check the codes. That's what they're there for

I'm not sure if there's a key on/key off/key on method for the 3rd generation Rams, but Autozone does in fact have a code reader, and they will read them for free if you go in there.

The transmission you have in your truck now is almost all electronically controlled. The computer tells it when to shift, and it gets it's information for that decision from a number of sensors. It also has a designated "shift-point" that it will shift at if it reaches that RPM level before shifting from data received from other sensors.

Tow/haul mode alters your shifting for exactly what it sounds like...towing/hauling situations, as long as you have it turned on

People on here give advice from experience and knowledge that they've gained over time. Hardly any of them are dealer techs or even dealership people. I gained a lot of my general knowledge from my dad, who was a dealer mechanic (they weren't techs back then) from 1975 til 1990. He still fixes cars today...just not as often. If it hadn't been for him, I probably wouldn't be interested in cars or able to work on them like I do.

As far as Phoenix area dealers, I'm not sure if that's info you'd find here. There are a lot of people, but regional info like that is often hard to find. You can try posting in the proper regional area at the bottom of the forums for info like that.
