Default time to change slicks

one of my friends has a 1972 chevelle ss 455 heavily modded 522hp 11.62 @ the 1/4 mile it has 12 inch slicks on the back i havent really talked to him in a while so i havent been able to ask him but ill ask you guys how do you know when it is time to change a pair of slick since they dont have any thread you cant go by that so what do you go by
