Trans with its own mind!!!
I have a 98 ram 1500 4x4 5.2L auto. Here's the problem, driving along
is ok most of the time. but sometimes it seems fine then I let off the
gas and when it slows to below 50mph it hits third then secound. i give
it the gas and it may shift or not and if it does it hits hard, also it
may make 3~4 shifts in a three secound time frame. No codes. about a
year ago i replaced the speed sensor and tps. I have reset the computer
so many times now i it does it on its own.
this problem is not always there. I can go for one, two and even three
weeks, but then it may do it for days on end.
any help would be great
thanx

The fluid is good, plus I must say,, there is no slipping. it will snap your neck. I did read that someone else had this type of problem and they went and had the flash in the computer up dated. I have 93K on it, so I figured if it has been this long, why should I need it. What do you think?
Thank you for your time.

RE: Trans with its own mind!!!
I had a similar problem. I bought my 1998 2500 Ram used. It drove great for about a month then I started having random downshifting. The symptom was drive for about 25 miles then the transmission would start donwshifting on its own. The Dodge dealer tore the truck apart. The transmission was burned up. The new "crated" tranny from Dodge was ordered and installed. The symptom continued. The computer was replaced. The symptom continued. The mechanic traced the wiring loom from the computer to the tranny and found the wiring loom had chaffed on the body. Apperantly there is a feedthrough hole in the cab that the wiring goes through to get to the tranny. The wiring was shorting to the cab and causing the computer to get a "low" signal on the wires. The "low" signal tells the computer to downshift the tranny. After multiple unecessary downshifts the computer burned the tranny then the shorted wire finally burned the computer. Final bill: $4,100. My truck runs like new now but it took three weeks to track and fix all the problems. Good luck!
